Measures and products to reduce the noise of refrigerators

In refrigerators and freezers, the small compressors that switch on and off at different times to cool the appliance are often a nuisance.

1

Introduction

What is already annoying in the dining room or in open-plan living/dining areas can quickly become a pain in the neck in a loft where everything is open and the humming can also be heard in bed at night. Here are a few suggestions on how to reduce the noise from the fridge or freezer and make your living space feel pleasant again.

2

Origin of the sounds

Refrigerators or freezers are usually placed with the open back or underside against a concrete wall or on the floor. They are open so that the waste heat from the compressor can escape and not build up in the appliance. Otherwise, the compressor would switch on more frequently as the appliance heats up. The sound waves are emitted by the appliance, hit the concrete wall and are emitted from there into the room, where they spread further.

3

Solution with sound insulation foams

Our sound insulation and noise protection foams are the solution for insulating your fridge or freezer. Install our self-adhesive Silphon® studded foam or pyramid foam directly behind the appliance on the concrete wall, or the flame-retardant Basotect® G+ melamine foam with a thickness of approx. 50 mm.

We recommend a distance between the foam and the appliance of around 50 mm to 100 mm so that the heat can continue to be dissipated from the appliance and does not build up. Ideally, the surface you cover should be at least as large as the back of the refrigerator, but preferably slightly larger so that you can absorb as many sound waves as possible.

4

Additional insulation for water noise

Even if the opening with the compressor is usually only at the bottom of the appliance, there are often cooling rods at the top, which also emit water noise. You can also insulate these with the solution mentioned above.

5

Simple installation and immediate effect

The panels, which are extremely lightweight, can be glued to the wall in just a few seconds. Then simply slide the fridge or freezer back in front of it - done. This prevents reflections from the wall and significantly reduces noise emissions. The sound waves are absorbed by the acoustic foam and the noise level becomes more bearable.
