Measures for the sound insulation of a door

Doors are often a weak point in sound insulation, but can be retrofitted with insulation. Here you can find out how to effectively insulate doors with foam - whether permanently installed or as a passageway. We explain materials as well as permanent and mobile solutions.

1

Stick sound insulation directly onto the door (door remains usable)

Cut the foam to the size of the door so that the door handle remains accessible and the foam does not drag on the floor. For thin insulation, first stick double-sided bitumen foil and then composite foam - ideally on both sides. The thicker the composite panels, the better the insulation.

For greater sound insulation, a 3-layer structure is recommended: composite foam panel - bitumen foil - composite foam panel. Pay attention to the door opening. Attach the first panel with a strong mounting adhesive.

Disadvantage: Adhesive residue remains after disassembly.

2

Clamp the sound insulation into the door shaft (without gluing)

Order a composite foam panel (at least 8 cm thick) and clamp it into the door shaft. The board should be 1-2 cm thicker on each side so that it holds. Alternatively, glue the foam to a wooden board (e.g. OSB) to ensure stability. A 3-layer structure is also possible here.

3

Stick sound insulation on the door (door remains closed)

If the door no longer needs to be opened, stick the thickest possible composite foam or the 3-layer construction directly onto the door - preferably on both sides for maximum insulation. As the door is no longer used, the insulation can be as thick as you like.
