Sound insulation for the interior and engine compartment of motorboats

What bothers motorboat fans the most? It's often the engine noise. But there are measures that can be taken to reduce it. Soundproofing and sound-absorbing materials on bulkheads and engine room ceilings minimize unwanted noise. If you want to ensure more peace and quiet or replace old, crumbling insulation, you can do something about it.

There are two types of sound: Airborne sound (medium to high frequency), which propagates through the air and can be reduced with sound insulation panels on the bulkheads, and structure-borne sound, which is transmitted via solid bodies.

1

Introduction

Engine vibrations are transmitted into the boat hull via the foundation and generate low-frequency noise. To minimize this structure-borne noise, an optimized engine mount from our vibration isolation range is required. In addition, Teroform heavy foils should be used to reduce sound transmission.

Sound waves that hit walls are partly reflected, absorbed or penetrate the wall. The choice of barrier layer influences the transmission of sound into the interior of the boat.

Regardless of whether you insulate the engine compartment, the interior or the floor - the procedure remains the same.

2

Materials for sound insulation

Special foams are used for insulation. We recommend:

  • Flame-retardant PUR recycled foam, combined with
  • Teroform® plastic damping foil or
  • Terodem® bitumen heavy foil (approx. 2 mm thick), which reduces vibrations and insulates noise.
A glued-on composite foam additionally minimizes reverberation and noise.

3

Engine compartment insulation

  1. Glue the flame-retardant recycled foam layer to the Terodem® bitumen that was laid first. The thicker the layer, the better the insulation.
  2. Our Vibra® glass fiber mat for thermal acoustic insulation is also suitable for airborne sound absorption and thermal insulation in the engine area.
4

Moisture-resistant sound insulation

If the foam could get wet, you can also laminate our PU skin Silphon® and water-repellent melamine foams (Hydrophobic Basotect® G+ / UF) with the heavy foil.

5

Conclusion

The right combination of heavy foil, foams and engine mounts can effectively reduce engine vibrations and noise. Make sure to install all components carefully to achieve maximum insulation performance.
