Recommendation for processing Terodem® and Teroform® self-adhesive sound-insulating heavy foils

Recommendation for processing self-adhesive sound-absorbing heavy foils

They reduce structure-borne noise and vibrations and optimize sound insulation for building acoustics and industrial applications.

1

Properties of the sound-absorbing heavy foils

Teroform and Terodem heavy-duty sound insulation foils are heavy, visco-elastic and flexible sheets or foils that are bonded over their entire surface to lightweight, thin construction materials to improve their sound insulation properties. Typical materials include wood and wood-based panels, plasterboard and gypsum fiberboard as well as thin steel, aluminum or copper sheets and rigid plastic panels. Most heavy-duty film types are already provided with a self-adhesive coating, which is protected from soiling by a removable PE film or silicone paper until processing.

2

Requirements for optimum bonding

In order to achieve a strong and durable bond between the self-adhesive heavy foils and the construction materials mentioned, the following points should be observed during application: The surface to be bonded must be dry, smooth, even and free of grease and dust. Acetone or an alcohol solution should be used for cleaning. Coarse, rough or fibrous substrates must be treated with a smooth coat (e.g. paint primer, adhesive or filler) before bonding. The drying time of the materials used must be taken into account. The material temperature of the substrate and heavy foil should be above +20°C at the time of application. Avoid air pockets when bonding the heavy foil. For optimum adhesion, the bonded heavy film should be pressed down firmly and ideally rolled on with a metal pressure roller.

3

Special requirements for wall and ceiling applications

For vertical wall and overhead ceiling applications that place high demands on the tensile and shear strength of the bond, it is particularly important to increase the strength of the bond. This applies in particular to heavy types with a surface weight of over 5 kg/m², such as Teroform 2812/13 or Terodem 5037/5038/5046. The bond can be reinforced by applying an additional adhesive film, such as contact adhesive or adhesive spray, to the surface of the construction material. In addition, mechanical safety fasteners such as metal strips, wooden battens or broad-headed nails can be used to reliably fix the heavy foil in place.

Recommendations for special bonding

For the bonding of Teroform and Terodem heavy foils to materials not listed, prior in-house tests are required. Appropriate recommendations for special applications can be obtained directly from us.
