Basotect® G+ melamine foam acoustic baffles –
Silphon® Acoustic Baffle Octagon – effective reduction of noise and reverberation for optimal room acoustics
The Silphon® Octagon acoustic baffle, made from BASF’s light grey open-cell melamine foam Basotect® G+, offers an aesthetically pleasing and technically impressive solution for the targeted optimisation of room acoustics, particularly in high-ceilinged or spacious interiors such as halls, canteens, open-plan offices, training and conference rooms. The octagonal geometry not only ensures a stylish appearance but also contributes to the acoustic effect, as the edges, surfaces and suspension optimally diffuse and absorb sound waves.

The Silphon® Octagon acoustic baffle, made from BASF’s open-cell melamine foam Basotect® G+ in light grey, offers an aesthetically pleasing and technically effective solution for the targeted optimisation of room acoustics, particularly in high-ceilinged or spacious interiors such as halls, canteens, open-plan offices, training and conference rooms. The octagonal geometry not only ensures a stylish appearance but also contributes to the acoustic effect, as the edges, surfaces and suspension optimally diffuse and absorb sound waves.
In terms of material properties, Basotect® G+ foam impresses with its very low density (approx. 9 kg/m³) and its excellent sound absorption performance across a broad frequency spectrum. Furthermore, the material meets the fire safety requirements of DIN 4102 B1 (flame-retardant) and has a BKZ 5.2 classification, making it suitable for use in public buildings or commercial installations where safety and comfort are equally important.
In practice, the acoustic baffle impresses in several ways: Suspending it from the ceiling creates free-standing ‘sound traps’ that efficiently absorb incident sound waves and significantly reduce reflected sound. The effect is particularly noticeable in rooms with high ceilings or strong sound-reflecting surfaces: reverberation times are reduced, speech intelligibility is improved, and the acoustic atmosphere is significantly enhanced. The light grey finish allows for unobtrusive integration into modern interior designs – whilst the octagonal shape adds a distinctive design feature.
Installation is efficient and flexible: standard dimensions such as 120 mm × 120 mm × 1000 mm are available; custom cuts and special lengths can be produced to customer specifications. Its low dead weight facilitates installation using wire ropes, hooks, or tension straps, even in existing ceiling structures or in retrofit situations. Thanks to the open-cell foam, the baffle is also easy to handle and transport.
