Butyl rubber sheeting is one of the densest grades of technical rubber available. A characteristic feature of butyl rubber is its exceptionally low permeability to gases and water vapour – a property that makes this material indispensable wherever reliable sealing against fluids and moisture is required. Added to this are its excellent damping properties, which also make the sheet suitable for reducing vibrations and structure-borne noise.

The chemical resistance profile of this compound is particularly impressive: it offers excellent resistance to ozone as well as to diluted and concentrated acids and alkalis. The material has only moderate resistance to oils and is not designed for use with solvents. The sheet is therefore particularly recommended for sealing against aqueous and aggressive media in building services and plant engineering.

Mechanically, with a hardness of 60 ± 5 Shore A, the sheet offers a minimum tensile strength of 90 kg/cm² (approximately 8.8 MPa) and an elongation at break of at least 350 %. A maximum compression set of 40 % ensures good resilience under continuous load; following heat ageing at 70 °C, the values remain stable within tight tolerances. The operating temperature range extends from –45 °C to +120 °C.

With a density of 1.20 g/cm³, the black butyl sheet is easy to process and is available by the metre or as bespoke cut-to-size sheets for customised sealing solutions.
