The term ‘rubber’, which is often underestimated, encompasses an enormous range of grades, properties and compounds that can be precisely tailored to the specific application.
Manufacturing processes for moulded rubber parts
Rubber moulded parts are manufactured using various production processes:
- Moulding (compression moulding): The raw rubber is placed into a heated mould and vulcanised under pressure. This process is particularly suitable for simple to moderately complex moulded parts, as well as for small and medium-sized production runs.
- Transfer moulding: The material is first pre-formed in a separate chamber and then pressed under pressure into the mould cavity. This ensures a high degree of dimensional accuracy. The process is particularly suitable for moulded parts with embedded metal or plastic inserts.
- Injection moulding: The rubber is plasticised and injected directly into the closed mould. This process offers the highest precision and short cycle times, and is ideal for large production runs and complex geometries.
The process used depends on the quantity, component geometry, tolerance requirements and material. We would be happy to advise you on selecting the optimal solution.
Materials and compounds
Depending on the requirements, various standard and special compounds are used:
- EPDM: weather-, ozone- and ageing-resistant, ideal for outdoor applications
- NBR: oil and fuel resistant, tried and tested for technical seals in industrial environments
- SBR: abrasion-resistant and cost-effective for general technical applications
- Silicone: high temperature resistance, physiologically safe and ideal for the food and medical technology sectors
- Viton® (FKM): excellent chemical and high-temperature resistance for particularly demanding applications
- HNBR: high resistance to heat, ozone and chemicals for components subjected to heavy loads
Each compound has specific properties in terms of temperature resistance, chemical resistance, mechanical strength and cost-effectiveness. Choosing the right material is crucial to the service life and operational reliability of the component.
