Noise reduction in vehicles – quieter on the road
Numerous noises are generated whilst driving – ranging from the rolling of the tyres and the engine to air and wind noise. To reduce these noise sources, special heavy-duty films (Terodem® and Teroform®) are used, which are applied to body panels, wheel arches, doors or the boot area. They act as effective structure-borne sound dampers and reduce vibrations in the metal.
Acoustic foams based on melamine resin (Basotect® G+) or recycled PUR foams are frequently used for interior insulation. These absorb airborne sound in the mid and high frequency ranges – ideal, for example, under the headliner, in door panels or behind the dashboard.
Polyester fibre mats (Fiberform 62T SL or Silphon®Fiber) are also increasingly being used in vehicle construction. They are lightweight, flexible, moisture-resistant and contribute to sound and thermal insulation behind trim elements – for example, in the side walls, boot or headliner.
Thermal insulation – a comfortable climate all year round
Reliable thermal insulation not only ensures comfortable temperatures inside the vehicle, but also reduces the load on the heating and air conditioning systems – thereby lowering energy consumption. Closed-cell PE foams (Plastazote MP15FR) or synthetic rubbers such as Armaflex®, Vibra®Flex or K-Flex are used for thermal protection. These materials are particularly suitable for roof areas, side panels or floor structures and also offer a degree of sound insulation.
A reflective aluminium laminate is frequently used in the headliner area or behind the trim in the engine compartment to direct heat radiation outwards and prevent thermal overload.
Vibration control – reduced vibration, longer service life
A comfortable driving experience also depends on the reduction of unpleasant vibrations caused by the chassis, drivetrain or road surface irregularities. High-quality elastomers such as Sylomer® or Sylodyn® or rubber-metal elements are used for targeted vibration decoupling. These are used, for example, in engine mounts, gearbox mountings or for body decoupling in the area of seats or floors.
